2010 Downtown Non-Profit Partner Organization Mission Statements & Websites
The Non-Profit Partners of the Art Colony Association include a wide-array of local Houston organizations. We rely on our Non-Profit Partners for the volunteer support that make the festivals run smoothly.
All proceeds from the Bayou City Art Festivals are donated to our Non-Profit Partners for use in our community. To date, the Art Colony Association has donated more than $2.5 million to local Houston organizations.
Listed below are our Non-Profit Partners for the 2009 Downtown Festival and a brief description of their services:
Art League Houston
Art League Houston is one of Houston’s longest operating non-profit visual arts organizations and was the first alternative art space in Texas. We offer year-round art classes for high school ages and adults. All of our exhibitions are free and open to the public and we have free weekly art classes through the HIV+ and Cancer Related Illnesses Healing Art Group, MS Healing Art Group and Physically Challenged Healing Art Group. Buffalo Bayou Partnership
Buffalo Bayou Partnership is the non-profit organization revitalizing and transforming Buffalo Bayou, Houston’s most significant natural resource. The Partnership coordinates the integration of major amenities into the bayou greenbelt and seeks ways to increase community involvement through pedestrian, boating and biking amenities, permanent and temporary art installations, and other natural and built attractions. www.buffalobayou.org
Bering Omega Community Services
Bering Omega Community Services’ mission is to nurture the well-being, and meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of persons affected by HIV/AIDS through compassionate health care and social services. Our goal is to bridge the gap in indigent care by providing, completely free-of-charge, oral health care services, adult day care, housing assistance and residential hospice care to approximately 2,600 of Southeast Texas’ most needy individuals. www.beringomega.org
City ArtWorks
City ArtWorks engages children in exciting hands-on art experiences. We provide accessible and affordable art education by trained educators and artists, acting on our governing principle that children flourish when given the opportunity to explore their own creativity. Exposure to the visual arts can help children develop a deeper understanding of their world and social environment. Downtown YMCA
for Houstonians since 1941 is a charitable organization dedicated to its mission of putting Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Community services and programs provided at the Downtown YMCA include child care, day camp, youth sports, aquatics, youth programs, active older adults, supportive services and health and wellness. The YMCA, with its 120 year history, is 501(c)(3) organization, that strives to make all of its programs accessible to all – regardless of an individual’s ability to pay. www.ymcahouston.org
The Heritage Society
Nestled in 10 acres of beautiful green parkland in the heart of downtown Houston, The Heritage Society boasts 9 historic structures dating from 1823 to 1905. The historic structures are authentically restored to reflect their original magnificence. Houston Center for Contemporary Craft
Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) is a nonprofit organization founded to advance education about the process, product and history of craft. HCCC’s major emphasis is on objects of art made primarily of fiber, metal, glass, clay and wood. As a resource for both artists and educators, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft offers the community a unique opportunity to experience the excitement of the handmade through exhibitions, workshops, gallery talks, studio demonstrations and educational outreach programs. www.crafthouston.org
Houston Center for Photography
HCP's mission is to increase society's understanding and appreciation of photography and its evolving role in contemporary culture. HCP strives to encourage artists, build audiences, stimulate dialogue, and promote inquiry about photography and related media through education, exhibitions, publications, fellowship programs, and community collaboration. Houston Center for Hearing & Speech

Lawndale Art Center
Lawndale Art Center is dedicated to the presentation of contemporary art focusing on work by Houston area artists. Lawndale offers exhibitions, lectures and events to further the creative exchange of ideas among Houston’s diverse communities. With four galleries housed in an Art Deco building located in Houston’s Museum District, Lawndale includes over 500 artists annually in changing exhibitions. Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts (MECA)
MECA is a community-based non-profit organization committed to the healthy development of underserved youth and adults through arts and cultural programming, academic excellence, support services and community building. MECA programs help promote self-esteem, discipline, and academic achievement, while instilling a sense of direction and a commitment to cultural diversity. The Museum of Cultural Arts, Houston (MOCAH)
MOCAH’s mission is to use art and creativity as tools for social awareness and community development.
MOCAH is Houston’s leading developer of community-based public art projects. Since 1999, MOCAH has developed more than 100 public art projects with the engagement of youth, artists, volunteers and community stakeholders. MOCAH is transforming urban communities into cultural and artistic destinations through the creation of site specific public art projects. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH)
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, is one of the largest art museums in America. The collections are presented in six locations that make up the institutional complex, including two house museums: Rienzi and Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens. Proceeds from the Bayou City Arts Festivals benefit the acquisitions fund of the museum's decorative arts department. Each year, objects are acquired for the collections that demonstrate the range of creativity found at the festivals. www.mfah.org
Orange Show Center for Visionary Art
The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art preserves and presents works of extraordinary imagination and provides an opportunity to express personal artistic vision. Programs include the award-winning Eyeopener Tours and the Art Car Parade & Festival. Our acclaimed stewardship efforts preserve two of Houston's most famous cultural icons: The Orange Show Monument and the Beer Can House while our archive and library are used by students, scholars, media, and artists. www.orangeshow.org
Several Dancers Core (SDC)
Several Dancers Core (SDC) is a professional dance organization that creates, performs and presents experimental contemporary dance and movement. CORE's live performances are riveting, passionate and unique. SDC was founded in 1980 and has been operating in Houston, Texas and Atlanta, Georgia since 1986 and has evolved into a seasoned dance organization. www.severaldancerscore.org
SPARK School Park Program
SPARK helps public schools develop their playgrounds into community parks. 2008 marked the 25th anniversary year of the program which has created over 200 parks in 10 school districts in the Houston /Harris County area. SPARK has also supported numerous public art projects. The Art Colony Association partners with SPARK on the printing of the annual SPARK Art Calendar. SPARK furnishes SPARK Coloring Books for the Creative Zone of the Bayou Arts Festival. www.sparkpark.org
Spay-Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP)
Our Mission: To stop the destruction of healthy dogs and cats by increasing the availability and use of animal sterilization services.
