Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park 2010 Jury Information
A record 1347 artists applied for entry into the 2010 Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park. The jury met on November 19, 2009 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Our panel of seven jurors included:
Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park 2010 Juror Bios
- Reginald Adams – Public artist and Executive Director of the Museum of Cultural Arts, Houston, an organization that he co-founded in 1999 with his wife and art partner, Rhonda Adams. He is the board president of the Land Assemblage Redevelopment Authority, a nonprofit governmental corporation that acquires chronically tax delinquent properties in nine of Houston’s most historic and disadvantaged communities for the construction of new and affordable housing. He is currently fulfilling a 12 month fellowship with the American Leadership Forum Class XXIV, and writing a book on how to design and produce community art projects.
- Susan Christian – Deputy Director of the Mayor’s Office of Special Events. She has been with the City of Houston for over 24 years and has served under former Mayors Whitmire, Lanier and Brown. Currently as Deputy Director in the Mayor's Office of Special Events (MOSE) under Mayor White, she oversees production, sponsorship and permitting of events for the City of Houston.
Each year, almost 850 events are held utilizing city property and streets, with an average annual attendance of 2 million people. Recently with Christian at the helm, the City of Houston completed “Freedom Over Texas with Fireworks Presented by Shell.” Christian’s dedication and commitment to her post within the Mayor’s Office of Special Events, as well as her passion for Houston, has enabled this event to become the ultimate July 4 celebration boasting the largest land-based fireworks display in the Nation.
- Kim Clark Renteria- Founder and Principal Artist, Lighthouse Glass, she creates site specific architectural stained glass installations. She has liturgical, commercial and residential installations in many sites across the United States as well as in Paris, London, Winnipeg and Kathmandu. She also served from 2001 to 2007 as the treasurer for the City of Houston Municipal Arts Commission and holds a B. F. A. in Sculpture from the University of Denver.
- Richard Fluhr - A Houston-based artist who has bought art, sold art, owned a gallery in Houston, and shown his work in other galleries. A past board member of the Art Colony Association, he was named the Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts “Artist of the Year” in 2002. Some of his work has found permanent homes in museums, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York, the Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi, and the British Museum in London. Richard has served on the Bayou City Art Festival jury previously.
- Ed Schipul – CEO and President of Schipul – The Web Marketing Company. He is an entrepreneur and Internet veteran who enjoys keeping up with online conversations. His company developed the Tendenci software, which powers more than 400 web sites and over 500,000 interactive users worldwide. Schipul blogs at www.eschipul.com, is an active photographer at www.flickr.com/eschipul, reads extensively and has more than 20 years experience in marketing and software programming.
- Trudy Smith – For the past five years, Trudi Smith has been Director of PR and Events at Buffalo Bayou Partnership, a non-profit organizations focusing on the revitalization and transformation of Houston's historic waterway. Trudi is currently on the Steering Committee of ArCHiTypes with AIA-Houston; she is a member of Houston Center for Photography, Menil Collection, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Rice Design Alliance..
Prior employment for the past 15 years has been in the marketing and development arena to include: the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, various art galleries in New York City, and The Grand Rapids Art Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
- Bart Truxillo - Preservation architect, designer and developer. Art Colony Association Board Member and past president. Graduate of the University of Houston (UH) with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture; recipient of the UH College of Architecture Alumni Award for Community Development in 1999. He is co-founder, past chair and Director Emeritus of the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance (GHPA), which awarded him the Preservation Alliances' Good Brick Award in 2000. He was editor of the book "Last of the Past" published by the GHPA. He is two-time president and multiple term director of the Houston Heights Association, which named him "Citizen of the Year" for his efforts as director of the Heights Museum Collection and other extensive volunteer work. Bart serves on the Houston Archeological and Historic Commission of the City of Houston, where he is immediate past chair. He has juried for Bayou City Art Festivals previously.
Jurors scored all artists on a scale of 1 (lowest) – 7 (highest). Scores of four are not allowed.
We are very excited about the quality and wide selection of fine art and contemporary crafts that was selected for presentation at Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park, March 26 - 28, 2010.
